Why Proper Hydration Matters

The last time you reminded yourself of the importance of proper hydration was when? We all know it is good for us, but why? For one it is clear that a major part is to avoid dehydration or dying from it. OK I may have stretched a little but it it is a known cause of death. When you are dehydrated you tend to eat more so watch out. Did you know that proper hydration has a huge impact on athletic performance? Let's take a closer look.

For starters hydration plays all sorts of roles in our bodies. We are made up of about 50%-60% of water. Many of it is loss through perspiration and many of it needed to carry out body functions. We take in water every day via the beverages and foods in our diet. The amount of water in our system impacts our physical and mental abilities. When you work out, your metabolism increases to create more energy. This process increases your core body temperature. The role of water is important in many aspects. One important role is to keep you cool as you work a sweat. Water can be a miracle cure for many common ailments such as headaches, fatigue, joint pain, and much more. Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory. It’s crucial to keeping your cardiovascular system running. When the water content in the body drops, so does blood volume. This means the cardiovascular system delivers less blood to muscles. They get less oxygen and are slower to flush waste products. This loss makes your body work harder to achieve less. Water is the 'Transporter' of our bodies that transports nutrients through the bloodstream. It also transports the waste material out of our bodies. Water is essential for proper circulation in the body. The more oxygen the body has available the more fat it will burn. Not only will your body burn more fat it will be full of energy when hydrated. Water helps remove toxins from the body, in particular from the digestive tract. Water suppresses the appetite and helps the body metabolize stored fat.

General Rule: Due to the fact that every body is different the rule we often hear about drinking 8 - 8 oz. of water per day can be misleading. We need to drink half our body weight in ounces of water every day. And why not Triple the intake for better results.
